As co-founder and manager at Al-Fatihah Learning Academy, Ustadha Zakiyah Gangat is passionate about creating space for female scholars to serve locally, grow in scholarship and the empowerment of women with learning rooted in sacred tradition. As an educator, Ustadha Zakiyah has been serving her local community for the past two decades, warmly welcoming six to sixty year olds into her classroom. Alhamdulillah.
Zakiyah’s background includes study of both traditional Islamic sciences with scholars from the East and West, alongside qualifications from mainstream institutions. Zakiyah received her Shahadah al-Alimiyyah at a traditional Islamic seminary in Gujarat, India. She then earned a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Psychology, Health Studies and Religions from the University of Toronto. A firm believer in perpetually learning, Ustadha Zakiyah has continued to further herself in her education. From Cambridge Muslim College, she earned a Diploma in Contextual Islamic Studies and Leadership, and most recently from Western University a Diploma in Not-For-Profit Management.
Dr. Shaykha Saleha Gangat is the co-founder and instructor at Al-Fatihah Learning Academy.
Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Shaykha Saleha pursued an Islamic education in Gujrat India at a traditional seminary, receiving her Shahadah al-Alimiyyah. Her seven year studies included Arabic language, and classical texts in the Islamic sciences of Tafseer (exegesis), Hadith (prophetic narrative), Fiqh (jurisprudence) and Tahfeez (memorization of the Qur’an). Dr. Shaykha Saleha was noted to be an outstanding student by many of her teachers who instilled in her a deep love for learning as well as teaching the Islamic sciences.
Dr. Shaykha Saleha began teaching in Toronto, dedicating almost twenty years to serving the youth of this city, while also raising her own family. Dr. Shaykha Saleha latterly pursued further education at the University of Toronto and at McGill University, respectively earning her BScHons in Psychology and Neuroscience and a degree in Medicine.
A mother of four, Dr. Shaykha Saleha is currently a practising family physician who remains dedicated to the students at Al-Fatihah Learning Academy.
Sajida Gangat is the co-founder and instructor at Al-Fatihah Learning Academy. She is the lead-instructor of the Advance Tajweed program alongside other teaching and mentoring roles at ALA. She has been blessed with many learning and teaching opportunities and has taught Islamic studies and Quranic recitation at various Islamic institutes in Scarborough for over a decade.
Ustadha Sajida has studied the Islamic Sciences (Alimiyyah program) in India. She received a diploma in Contextual Islamic Studies and Leadership from Cambridge Muslim College. Most recently, Sajida specialised in Quranic recitation ( Tajweed and Qira’at). In 2014, Sajida travelled to study under the renowned Qari of India; Qari Siddique Falahi and Qari Abdul Aziz Falahi from whom she received her Ijāzah in Hafs ‘an ‘Āsim and Ijāzah in the small variant readings (al-‘Ashr al-Sughrā). She had the opportunity to read to multiple qurraa’(licensed instructors) such as Shaikh Uthman Khan from Canada, Shaikh Muhammed Aud from Madina and receive ijazah from them.
Sajida recently completed a Masters in Pastoral Studies from the University of Toronto and is qualifying to be Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario.
Sajida’s vision is to see a spiritually thriving muslim community. And what better way than through celebrating the miracle of the Quran through reflection and recitation.
Zahida Gangat is the co-founder and teacher at Al-Fatihah Learning Academy where she is the lead-instructor for the Qira’t al-Ashr al-Sughra program alongside other teaching and supervisory roles. She is passionate about Islamic education, observing its teachings and growing spiritually.
Ustadha Zahida completed the six year Islamic studies curriculum from a traditional seminary in India receiving her Shahadah al-Alimiyyah. She then studied under the renowned Qari of India, Qari Muhammad Siddique Falahi and Qari Abdul Aziz Falahi from whom she received her Ijazah in Hafs ‘an ‘Asim and Ijazah in the small variant readings (al-’Asharah al-Sughra). She thereafter studied with Shaikh Uthman Khan from Canada and received another ijazah in (al-’Asharah al-Sughra). Most recently, Ustadha travelled to Madina to recite to Shaikh Muhammed Aud and received her ijazah with him.
Ustadha Zahida is currently completing her Master’s in Pastoral Studies and Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy training from the University of Toronto.
Umm Hassaan was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. She commenced her Islamic learning at a very young age and has been keen about sacred knowledge since. She travelled to South Africa where she graduated in 2010 from the Alimiyyah program at Madrasah Mueenul Islam.
She has been active in passing on Islamic knowledge to women of all ages for over a decade. She is passionate about growth and is currently pursuing further studies in different Islamic sciences under the leadership of various scholars.
In addition to being a domestic engineer and mother of two, Umm Hassaan is also one of the teaching instructors at Al-Fatihah Learning Academy, where she graduated from and received her Ijazah in Hafs and Qira’ah ‘Ashara Sughra.
Naila Patel is an instructor at Al-Fatihah Learning Academy where she teaches the Intermediate Tajweed class.
Ustadha Naila started her studies in advanced tajweed at Al-Fatihah Learning Academy in 2017 graduating with an Ijazah in Hafs ‘an ‘Asim. She thereafter went on to pursue her Ijazah in Qira’ah ‘Ashara Sughra (10 variant readings) in 2019 under Ustaadha Sajida and Ustaadha Zahida. She completed her ijazah program in the summer of 2021 and has been teaching at Al-Fatihah Learning Academy since then.
Alongside teaching Naila is pursuing her bachelors in French studies at York University and has completed her third year. She is also passionate about learning the islamic sciences and is currently completing her fourth year of Alimiyyah studies with Zaynab Institute online. She is an active member of the Malton community and is a part time teacher at the Malton Masjid evening maktab.
